I'm Worried About Falls

A fall can be frightening for you and for the person you care for. This guide covers what to look for, what to change at home, what to do if a fall happens, and when to get help.

What to watch for

  • Medicines that may cause dizziness or confusion.
  • Dementia or mild cognitive impairment.
  • Balance or walking problems, or feeling dizzy when getting up.
  • Clutter, loose items, and unsafe footwear.

What you can change

  • Clear things a person could trip over.
  • Add grab bars in the shower or tub and next to the toilet.
  • Put railings on both sides of stairs.
  • Choose nonskid, low-heeled shoes. Avoid socks and smooth-soled slippers on stairs and floors.
  • Ask the doctor or pharmacist to review all medicines.
  • Help them stand up slowly.
  • Ask the doctor about strength and balance exercises. Tai Chi is one example.

If a fall happens

  1. Check whether they seem hurt. Do not rush them up.
  2. If they are hurt or cannot get up, get help or call 911.

Tell the doctor

Tell the doctor about any fall, even if there was no pain.
