Colorado Family Caregiver Support Program

There is hereby created in the state department the family caregiver support program, referred to in this section as the “program”. The program shall allocate available moneys to area agencies on aging to provide support services to the following caregivers:

The goal of the NFCSP is to provide services to caregivers providing assistance to older adults, as well as grandparents over age 60 raising grandchildren. Services provided through the NFCSP fall into five categories:

  1. Information to caregivers about available services
  2. Assistance to caregivers in gaining access to supportive services
  3. Individual counseling, organization of support groups, and caregiver training to assist the caregivers in making decisions and solving problems relating to their caregiving roles
  4. Respite care to enable caregivers to be temporarily relieved from their caregiving responsibilities
  5. Supplemental services, on a limited basis, to complement the assistance provided by caregivers, including:
    • Home modifications
    • Assistive technologies
    • Emergency response systems
    • Equipment/supplies

Eligibility

  • Care recipient age: at least 60
  • Relationship: other relative

Questions to ask the program

These are questions to ask the program, not a verdict on your eligibility. Confirm the current rules directly with the program.

  • Does the person receiving care live in Colorado? Residency is usually the first thing a program checks.
  • Does your relationship to the person (other relative) count for this program?
  • Is the person receiving care in the covered age range (60 or older)?
  • Is there a caregiver-specific department, coordinator, or support line? Ask for it by name. Many agencies have one that isn’t advertised on the website.
  • What documents do you need from us to start an application?
  • Is there a waitlist right now, and how long is it?
