Montana Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit

Montana property-tax-related refundable income tax credit for older homeowners or renters. The Montana Department of Revenue states the credit may be up to $1,150 for eligible residents age 62 or older who meet residency, occupancy, and household-income rules.

Montana’s Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit is a property tax relief program delivered as a refundable income tax credit of up to $1,150. Eligible claimants must be age 62 or older as of December 31, have lived in Montana for at least nine months, rented, owned, or leased a Montana home for at least six months, and have total household income under $45,000. The credit amount is calculated by formula using household income, rent, and property tax. Montana DOR separately lists the former Elderly Care Credit as repealed after tax year 2021, so this record now represents the current homeowner/renter credit rather than a repealed caregiver credit.
