Minnesota Child Care, Child, Working Family, Property, and Senior Tax Relief

Minnesota tax relief pathways that may apply to caregiver households, including the refundable Child and Dependent Care Credit, Child Tax Credit, Working Family Credit, Credit for Qualifying Older Children, Property Tax Refund, Renter's Credit, and Senior Citizens' Property Tax Deferral.

Minnesota offers several tax relief paths relevant to caregiver households. The Child and Dependent Care Credit helps offset qualifying care expenses and is refundable. The 2025 Child Tax Credit can provide up to $1,750 per child under age 18, with no cap on the number of children, subject to income phaseout. The refundable Working Family Credit is similar to the federal EITC and is combined with the Child Tax Credit and Credit for Qualifying Older Children on Schedule M1CWFC. Minnesota also provides property tax relief for eligible homeowners and a Renter's Credit claimed on the income tax return. When claiming a Property Tax Refund, taxpayers may qualify for a household-income subtraction if they or a spouse are seniors, have permanent and total disability, or have dependents. The Senior Citizens' Property Tax Deferral can limit annual homestead property tax payments to 3% of household income, with the state paying the remainder as a loan.
