Maryland Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI)

Maryland's Family and Medical Leave Insurance program (originally the Time to Care Act) will provide up to 12 weeks of partial wage replacement for workers who need time off to care for a seriously ill family member, bond with a new child, or recover from their own serious health condition. The program is NOT YET EFFECTIVE: contributions begin January 1, 2027 and benefits begin January 1, 2028 (delayed multiple times from original 2025/2026 timeline). Uses a two-tier sliding-scale formula: 90% of wages up to 65% of the state average weekly wage, plus 50% of wages above that threshold, up to a maximum of $1,000/week. Funded by shared employer-employee payroll tax at 0.9% of wages.

NOT YET EFFECTIVE — contributions begin January 1, 2027; benefits begin January 1, 2028. Up to 12 weeks of wage replacement for family caregiving, parental bonding, or own medical leave. Workers can receive up to 24 weeks if combining own medical leave with parental leave. Two-tier sliding-scale formula: 90% of wages up to 65% of state average weekly wage, plus 50% of wages above that, up to a maximum of $1,000/week.
